This is one of my major gripes (and one of LeVar’s major gripes, apparently) with the series. In a future, where the world is all about its science and tech, how is the CHIEF ENGINEER of the Federation’s FLAGSHIP not, just, constantly getting laid?!?!

I thought about it too, and I realized that between the time commitment of his job and having to take care of the kid, he simply has no time left for dating.

Now before you tell me La Forge didn’t have kids, hear me out: Data is an android, yes. However, Geordi is often the one Data turns to when he has questions of emotions/humanity/social etiquette/social norms. Additionally, Geordi also has “play time” with Data via Sherlock simulations in the holodeck.

So for all intents and purposes, Geordi is the Chief Engineer of the flagship of Starfleet, but he’s also a single father who is married to his job. Oh, and he can see through clothes.

here’s this guy who, we don’t know whether there’s a history with zoey at this point or not, but she did not ask to be his science partner, he had to, in his words, beg the teacher to pair them up. what do u suppose he meant by “come round,” by the way? u don’t invite someone to come round to the library, u suggest to meet up at the library or the cafe or some public spot. where someone “comes round” to is ur house. once asking and denied, okay that’s fair, but instead of work out a place where they could meet, y’know, like a rational and studiously-minded noncreep, he proceeded to try the same thing five times and then passive aggressively do the whole project rather than work with her on her terms.

times zoey’s wants are considered: 0.5 (i’ll give him half a point for sharing that she did say no to him… five times)

after the failed science class ploy (where, need i remind you, he invited a girl to his house five times after being repeatedly told no), he saw fit to send her three valentines. note the “i tried to be romantic,” can also be read as “i tried to be romantic” or “i tried to be romantic” either of which can be easily translated into the truth, which is “u rejected my more outright amorous valentine-coated advances once so rather than take it like a champ i tried again and then one more time until u realized there would be gifts regardless and disposed of them as u saw fit” because you don’t give someone three valentines do u see how that would happen is if the first two were rejected but that somehow wasn’t good enough

it’s important to note here that he found her at the disco already. she was there independent of his being there, likely with friends or (!!!!) possibly with a date (!!!!) but we don’t know because again, this is only his side of the story !!! so he corners her at the school dance. after the science project and the three valentines, she has clearly realized that “no” just does not work on this guy and feels the need to (!!!!) secretly leave the dance she came to on her own (!!!!) and he lurked for two hours he lurked that is lurking

so we’ve now got a total of nine rejections on toby’s scoreboard, that’s impressive. let’s recount: five times he tried to get a girl to his house, three times after that he gave her valentines, and one time he forced her out of what was supposed to be a nice night with friends. he thinks maybe his game isn’t good enough, his game of disregarding every signal he’s been given because clearly if he just plays the right cards she’ll fall into his lap. so he brings big money into the picture. because if she didn’t want to go to his house or even dance with him then she’ll definitely want to spend quality time alone with him at a concert where, depending on the band and the venue, things get notoriously shifty. that’s gonna work. since zoey is now painfully aware that toby will give her things no matter what she does, and, hey, she really loves this band they are great, she won’t let his creepiness spoil this one and gets that lovely night out with friend that he took from her the night of the dance. because hey, free shit is awesome, concerts are great, and she feels hella safer with her friend than she does in the general vicinity of toby

and now, finally in year 11 he gets the picture that she just isn’t into him. hijacks her status about dudes being dicks, failing to realize that he’s been a dick this whole time, to spew his Nice Guy™ crap in the most vilifying way possible, considering her wants a total of, give or take, one (1) time over the course of four (4) years of one-sided courtship (spoiler: that’s called creeping actually). so yes, sometimes girls are dicks, but sometimes guys just don’t know how to take “no” for an answer in its MANY many forms, feel entitled to any girl they choose, see it as a game, and then get pissed when they lose.

at what point does a girl stop being societally obligated to play nice? at what point are a girl’s feelings of security more important than some dudebro’s shitty ManFeels? at what point can a girl finally stick up for herself against these aggressions and be justified? i say the answer to all of these is: whenever she damn well pleases. if he can ignore her feelings and continue to harass her then she can be “a bit rude” and get away with it.

The philosophies in Star Trek are kinda part of the actual setting. If you don’t get that, why are you allowed to make Star Trek movies.

Sigh. The whole point of Star Trek is that it’s philosophical. If you don’t want philosophical Science Fiction, there’s plenty of that for you to enjoy, but Star Trek is philosophical. Philosophy is part of Star Trek’s DNA, and if you’re given the captain’s chair, you’d better damn well respect that.

And thus it all becomes clear. He disdains the philosophy that is the underpinning of Trek, therefore hasn’t bothered to try to understand it or engage with it critically.

What gets me is the arrogance of this. If Star Trek is too philosophical for you, if you cannot connect with its fans, if you don’t have an understanding of the foundation of it, let alone a love for it, why do you agree to take it on? Why don’t you say “you know, maybe I’m not the guy for this job, maybe someone who’s always felt connected to this material should be the one to bring it forward in time.”?

The philosophy is more integral to Star Trek than any starships or Vulcans. And so agree with the posters above me. What kind of shitty arrogance do you have that makes you think it’s okay to dumb it down without even trying to understand the foundation that the universe is built on?

I was already peeved Star Trek was becoming another “tits and lasers” action movie, but I let it slide. Maybe the producers overrode the writers. Maybe this is just Hollywood being Hollywood. But wtf, the man in the captain’s chair is going out of his way to be ignorant about the series AND is bragging about it publicly?

So this will be a post on last night’s HIMYM episode, so spoilers after the post break

I am really in love with the big reveal. S8 was when they started developing the life of The Mother. Before that, she was hinted at as this momentous event in Ted’s life, a viewpoint that made me a bit uncomfortable.

The Mother is her own person. She’s had her own life alongside Ted’s life. I was really glad when S8 started approaching her from this direction because it made her an individual person rather than “Ted’s Wife.”

Similarly, that’s why I loved the big reveal. It shows that she was there, doing her own thing and living her life before she met Ted. She existed before Ted, and that she herself is independent of him.

On a semi-related note, for me that’s one of the things I think it’s fun to think about. Most of us are going to end up with someone, and for me I try to think about what this person is doing right now. What’s she up to in her life? If I could meet her early, what would I say? Maybe I’m just being sappy again, but for me the S8 finale played well into how I feel.

Should I be feeling as happy about this as I should over a TV show? I can’t help but feel giddy about this as if it’s some big life accomplishment. It only took eight years of watching this show to get to this point.

On a closing note: I’m not the biggest fan of HIMYM’s songs, but I do love how well they match the scenes. Last night with The Shin’s Simple Song is no exception.

While I was still on track for graduate school, my cousins shared the following story about her time as a PhD candidate:

My cousin went into her grad program with a PI already in place, a lab ready to accept her, and funding waiting for her. Despite all this, for three years every thesis she proposed was shot down. Her PI kept explaining that my cousin couldn’t “see the forest for the trees.” My cousin brought up every question she could think of related to her intended project, from focusing on how a specific cell signalling pathway works to the cascading effect of a target gene’s expression. Everything just came back with the same response, “You’re not asking the right questions.”

Depressed that her project was going nowhere, she took a year of absence and worked in industry instead. After a year of working there she finally came to understood what her PI meant. Four years after that, she graduated with her PhD

I may not be heading to grad school anymore, but I think this same concept applies in everyday life. We’re so caught up in focusing on the details that we forget to ask ourselves the obvious question in front of us. Sometimes, this ends up holding us back.

For the past week I’ve been reading articles from many mainstream news sites about how Google Glass is a bad product. It’s too isolating, it will never catch on, it’ll be a niche product that dies. I was sitting here thinking about how these people sound like the first reviewers of the iPhone. To me it’s almost obvious that Glass is the start of a whole new realm of consumer products. Augmented Reality is the next thing. Even if Google Glass doesn’t catch on, it will start a whole new market. In short, augmented reality glasses are here and they’re going to be big.

I then start thinking back to the iPhone and how all the people who ignored the journalists had a big advantage with iOS apps. Similarly, anyone who capitalizes on Google Glass now despite the criticism will be in an excellent market position. They’ll be one of the firsts so they’ll be more noticeable, they’ll have a more intimate and stronger following, and they’ll have more experience than later developers who will join only when Glass “catches on.”

Then the obvious question hits me: “Why can’t I?” I know that whoever starts developing needed apps for Glass and other augmented reality glasses will have a huge advantage in the market. So, why can’t I be one of those people?
